Category:Rave (raver)When the Southern Poverty Law Center listed the anti-gay hate group known as the Family Research Council (FRC) as a “hate group” on Monday, the organization quickly took issue with the designation. “FRC strongly disagrees with SPLC’s characterization of the organization and its mission as a hate group,” said FRC president Tony Perkins. “SPLC’s decision to use that designation is a gross misuse of that term.” The SPLC is well-known for its work in the fight against bigotry and hate. The organization does so by identifying groups it considers to be antithetical to the principles of equality and compassion. Among those is the anti-gay hate group the Family Research Council. So why is the SPLC listing FRC as a hate group? The Southern Poverty Law Center website explains that groups that are “on the extremist fringe of the political spectrum,” “espouse[s] anti-government views,” and “have beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics.” In the FRC’s case, the hate group designation stems from the organization’s work in fighting against gay rights. The SPLC explains that FRC “is vehemently opposed to same-sex marriage and supports a constitutional amendment to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman.” FRC also believes “that the Boy Scouts should be banned from sponsoring merit badge programs for members of the gay and lesbian community.” However, the FRC thinks that “SPLC’s selective use of the term ‘hate group’ is wrong,” Perkins said in the organization’s statement. “As a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, FRC is subject to many of the same rules and regulations as any other social welfare organization, including prohibitions against endorsements and political activities,” the statement read. “SPLC’s decision to use the term ‘hate group’ is a gross misuse of that term, which has no place in this debate.” Some have accused the SP
